Ceramic Product Manufacturing in Australia Industry Data and Analysis

Claudia Burgio-Ficca
Analyst Melbourne, Australia July 2025

Ceramic product manufacturers have experienced turbulent times in recent years, shaped by the ebb and flow of the Australian building construction sector. Throughout the pandemic, low interest rates and government stimulus delivered a short-term boost in demand for housing, although this was skewed towards single-unit dwellings as multi-unit developments lost favour. However, both commercial and industrial building activity faced significant slowdowns, weighing on demand for ceramic tiles, sanitaryware and plumbing fittings. The post-pandemic environment saw further shifts, with inflation and climbing interest rates pushing buyers back towards medium-and high-density housing, while institutional construction, like schools and hospitals, gained momentum. All the while, manufacturers have battled against stiff import competition, mainly from China, Italy and Spain, which has kept margins tight and fostered highly competitive market conditions. Overall, industry revenue has been growing at an annualised 2.0% over the past five years and is expected to total $757.2 million in 2025-26, when revenue will dip by an estimated 1.9%.
