Grain Growing in Australia Industry Data and Analysis

NL
Nicholas Larter
Analyst Melbourne, Australia July 2025

The Grain Growing industry has fluctuated in recent years following weather conditions, global grain prices and crop supplies volatility. Revenue is on track to grow at an annualised 11.0% over the five years through 2024-25, reaching $21.5 billion, including 9.6% growth in the current year. Improved rainfall from consecutive La Niña events earlier in the period supported higher output volumes, with wheat and barley yields hitting record highs in 2022-23. However, softer prices for wheat and coarse grains in 2024-25, as global supply chains stabilise and Ukrainian and Russian exports partially recover, are expected to temper the pace of revenue growth.Grain growers' performance remains cyclical, with production declines prompting price spikes that encourage more planting in subsequent seasons. After three consecutive years of high output, the return of El Niño conditions in 2023-24 and continued dryness into 2025 have constrained yields across major grain-producing regions like South Australia and Western Australia. Although global demand for feed grains, oilseeds and human-consumption grains continues to trend upwards, particularly in Asian markets, recent output moderation has tempered profitability gains. Still, industry profit margins remain solid at 31.9% in 2024-25, benefiting from earlier price spikes and improved operational efficiencies through machinery investment and precision agriculture adoption.Weather conditions will continue to be the predominant factor in the performance of the Grain Growing industry. The strongest long-term growth prospects appear to be in Asia, where rising incomes and dietary shifts towards higher rates of meat consumption are fuelling demand for feed grains like barley and oilseeds like canola. Although the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry forecast wheat prices to remain volatile, particularly through 2027-28, sustained overseas demand will support export revenue. Emerging domestic markets for sustainable products like biofuels, bioplastics and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) offer alternative growth avenues for Australian grain growers, allowing them to secure streams of revenue that are less exposed to changes in trade policy.Despite these opportunities, overall industry revenue is forecast to drop at an annualised 4.4% over the five years through 2029-30, reaching $17.1 billion. Production volumes will be hit by reduced rainfall, making for a more difficult growing environment. Global grain prices will weaken, driven by the eventual end of the Russian-Ukraine conflict, leading to greater worldwide production and the widespread use of genetically modified crops, yielding larger harvests. Even so, growers who adapt through crop selection, investment in water-efficient technology and market diversification will likely fare better against these headwinds.
