Grape Growing in Australia Industry Data and Analysis

VD
Varis Desai
Analyst Melbourne, Australia February 2026

Volatile growing conditions and a misaligned supply of grapes to downstream markets have stoked volatility in the industry’s performance. Growers in warm climate zones, like New South Wales’s Big Rivers region, rely on irrigation more than growers in cool climate zones, where rainfall tends to be higher and less volatile. Extreme weather events and other external factors have made grape growing considerably tricky. Table and dried grape production has fluctuated wildly in recent years, surging in 2022-23, dropping sharply in 2023-24 and skyrocketing again in 2024-25. Volumes are forecast to recede again in 2025-26 away from the near-record levels last year, contributing to a contraction in revenue by an expected 9.6% in 2025-26. Wine grape production is also expected to fall in 2025-26. Weaker demand for red wine grapes and plunging prices have further weighed on revenue over the past five years. Overall, revenue is anticipated to have declined at an annualised rate of 3.1% over the five years through 2025-26, reaching $1.9 billion.
