Oxygen & Hydrogen Gas Manufacturing in Canada industry analysis

Oxygen and hydrogen manufacturers in Canada have faced a challenging landscape in recent years, influenced by a confluence of regulatory pressures, market shifts and economic fluctuations. The increasing focus on environmental responsibilities has pressed these manufacturers to evolve, aiming to mitigate their carbon footprints while grappling with the dynamics of import penetration, especially from the US and China. Despite these hurdles, manufacturers have enjoyed certain pockets of growth, particularly fueled by demands from the healthcare sector during the pandemic and increased industrial activity related to oil and gas exploration. However, the reliance on downstream markets like the automobile and electronics industries has been a double-edged sword, often mired by declining performances in these markets. Industry revenue has been decreasing at a CAGR of 3.6% over the past five years to total an estimated $1.3 billion in 2024, including an estimated decrease of 4.3% in 2024.

Trends and Insights

  • Canadian manufacturers faced tough times as environmental regulations and import competition bite. Stricter pollution controls and higher import penetration have dented production volumes, affecting industries like automobile and consumer electronics and stifling industrial gas consumption.
  • The merchant users market, a key revenue driver, is experiencing mixed trends. Healthcare was on the rise amid the pandemic, but the construction and auto sectors faced hurdles because of shifting economic conditions and import pressures.
  • Manufacturers often locate their largest production facilities near their research centers or headquarters. Air Liquide Canada Inc., based in Montreal, exemplifies this trend by strategically situating major facilities close to its corporate base.
  • Internal competition hinges on price, product purity and supply reliability. Companies must ensure proximity to key markets to succeed. These factors drive competitive dynamics, influencing market strategies and positioning.

Industry Statistics and Trends

Market size and recent performance (2015-2030)

Industry revenue has declined at a CAGR of 3.6 % over the past five years, to reach an estimated $1.3bn in 2025.

Trends and Insights

Declines in downstream markets have hindered manufacturers' performance

  • Growing environmental consciousness among Canadian consumers has pressured government institutions at the federal and provincial levels to broaden their regulatory measures for pollution-heavy industries such as chemical manufacturing, steelmaking and petroleum refining. This trend has hindered production volumes and consumption of manufacturers' products.
