BHP Group Limited, now trading as BHP, is a diversified resources company which extracts, processes and markets metals, minerals, coal, iron ore and petroleum products to global markets.
The company operates through the following divisions:
Iron Ore - This division explores for and extracts iron ore, and is one of the largest suppliers of the commodity to global markets. The company has operations in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and in Brazil through Samarco, a joint venture with Brazilian miner Vale.
Coal - This division produces and markets thermal coal for use in industrial applications and power generation and hard coking coal for use in the manufacture of steel. BHP supplies the global market through its mines in Queensland and New South Wales. The company owns 50% of BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, 80% of BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal, and 100% of New South Wales Energy Coal.
Potash - This division mines potash for the use of fertilizers and can also be used in a variety of applications including glass manufacture, oil & gas drilling, aluminium recycling, water softening and fireworks. This division mines potash at the Jansen Potash Project in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Copper - This division is involved in the exploration for and mining of copper, silver, lead, zinc, molybdenum, uranium and gold. The Company’s uranium business is currently comprised of the world's largest uranium deposit in Olympic Dam, South Australia. The Olympic Dam mine also produces copper, gold and silver and has fully integrated facilities onsite to process ore to metal. Additionally, the company owns the Nickel West mine in Western Australia and retains an interest in copper assets in Chile, Peru and the United States.
Nickel - This division explores and mines nickel for use in stainless steel and electric vehicles. Nickel is mined in the Northern Goldfields in Western Australia.
